Staff Mini-Marketing Assignments

Gaining better control of Business Outcomes

One of the reasons we began making the staff switch a few years ago from independent contractors being paid commission, to employees being paid a fixed hourly wage, was so that we had better control over our business outcomes.

We know that our allowable expectations of independent contractors are very limited, however it is a different story with our employees; if we are paying them hourly, they are obligated to be active participants.

How should employees spend their “down time”?

During down times, you can either opt to operate with skeleton staff; send staff home who don’t have client’s; have them clean the spa within an inch of it’s life, OR you can put them to work on a program to help grow future spa revenues.

My choice is the last one.

What if during the recruitment stage, we advised candidates that one of the criteria included in their Job Description and Evaluation, was that they were expected to meet quotas in marketing?

What if you were to expect each staff member to contribute to building the business and on a monthly basis they are to:

  • hand out 20 brochures;
  • gather 2 referrals;
  • make 10 cold calls;
  • make follow up calls to all current clients;
  • book 5 complimentary consultations;
  • give 5 guest tours, and so on.

What if you have staff that have a specialized talent? Can they provide workshops? Demonstrations? Presentations at luncheons?

Do you think it’s fair to ask your staff to network for you during off-hours?

If these staff suggestions sit right with you, they can make a huge difference in the businesses bottom line. If handled right, these required initiatives can become a source of pride for your staff, with of course, ample rewards for outstanding contributions.
