The Puddicombe House is a Historic Italianate home built in 1868 located in downtown New Hamburg, Ontario

The 6900 sq ft house was built as a single family residence by businessman, MP and Senator Samuel Merner. In 1888 the house was sold to the Puddicombe family for $ 4,500.00.

The Puddicombe’s lived in the house until 1956. At that time the house was sold and it was converted into a six unit apartment complex. The conversion into apartments was made without respect for the character of the house. Intricate plaster cornice detail was covered over with false ceiling, holes were punched in ceiling and walls to accommodate plumbing pipes for the apartments and kitchen cupboards were built from plywood.

The exterior of the house was allowed to go into a state of disrepair.

In 2004 the house was offered for sale. Karen and Lyle Cressman recognized the potential of this grand house and purchased it. The Cressmans then embarked on a $ 1,000,000.00 restoration of the house and the Puddicombe House Restaurant, Bed and Breakfast and Spa was born.

False ceilings were removed, plaster restoration specialists repaired the intricate ceiling details, plumbing, heating and electrical components were all updated. A grand porch was built to the specifications of the original blueprints. Puddicombe House received a 2006 Heritage Award for the restoration project.

The house now has a 70 seat restaurant on the main floor. An additional 20 dining seats are available on the porch in season. There are six elegant Bed and Breakfast Rooms on the second floor each with an ensuite.

The lower level accommodates the Spa and Hair Salon. Amber Cressman the daughter of Karen and Lyle is a graduate of Seneca College Spa Management Program and is the Spa Manager. Amber is also a graduate of the Stratford School of Hairdressing. After several years of experience in the industry, Amber took on the position of managing the Puddicombe House Spa. “I think it is important to offer as many services as possible and the inclusion of the hair salon is a definite advantage”, said Amber. “In a small town a portion of our clientele has never visited a spa before. The inclusion of the hair salon gives first time spa visitors an opportunity to visit without feeling intimidated.”

New Hamburg with a population of around 6000 people has never had a spa that offers such an extensive menu of professional spa services. The Christmas season is certainly important for Puddicombe Spa. It provides an opportunity to market gift certificates and when recipients redeem them, the opportunity to develop new clientele.

“Our prices are moderate”, said Karen Cressman, Manger of Puddicombe House. “We want people to experience an elegant atmosphere without extreme pricing.” The Puddicombe House will soon be offering laser hair removal, a new addition to services offered.

A unique service of The Puddicombe Spa is a Mommy and Me Pedicure. Girls under 10 get a free pedicure with Mom. “Both Mom and daughter really love it” said Amber. “We also offer a “Girls Night Away” package. For a package price friends can stay overnight, have dinner in the restaurant and take advantage of spa services.” An Infared Sauna is also located in the spa. An Infared Sauna has numerous health benefits and both spa day patrons as well as overnight guests can take advantage of it.

“We want to continue to grow the spa both with new fresh ideas and new services in a unique and unitimidating atmosphere. It is imperative in this business that you offer training to your staff and are current with the latest trends” said Amber.

Early in the planning stage both Karen and Amber met with Leslie Lyon of Spas2b to discuss their plans. In that initial meeting Leslie was able to provide valuable advice and offered suggestions. They also attended the Spas2b Training course “Successful Spa Start Up, Management and Operations”. “Not only did the course provide a lot of material of interest but also the interaction with other participants was valuable” said Amber.
