Leaders must have Activists


What is a team without a great leader?

Well, nothing really. If you let your team down, your chances for service superiority and a healthy, profitable business, are diminished. Your most important role as a Leader is to inspire those who answer to you, by leading through example.

You are silently observed and critiqued by your staff, every minute of every day

The less involved you are, the more doubtful, negative, and even critical your staff will become of you. So it would seem that the more positive involvement you provide, the more likely it is that your staff will become more accepting, reachable, true believers. If you really want to know what it feels like to have success in the palm of your hands, you must become that “Leader with Presence” and develop a support system of voluntary advocates, or even better, true activists.

Gaining your MBWA degree (Management by Walking Around – Hewlett Packard) is the first step and from there, the rest will fall into place – but you must be there (some say 50-60% of your day should be spent on your staff).

Here’s what you can expect more of with your increased interest and involvement:

  1. Respectful staff who are accepting of your authority;
  2. Tolerance among staff and a lifted team spirit;
  3. Open-minded, agreeable, even-handed behaviours;
  4. Pleasurable, supportive, “pitched-in” work environment;
  5. Overall interest in productivity, sharing, and success of the business.

Here’ s what you can expect less of:

  1. Judgemental behaviours and lack of support;
  2. Resentment over taking orders;
  3. In-fighting and competition;
  4. The tail wagging the dog;
  5. “It’s not my job, I’m just here to collect a pay check”.
