Spa Water Consumption

A question submitted to Spas2b:

Can you tell me how I can best estimate how much water my spa will use and therefore the type of water heating system I will require?

Our Response:

This is a very good question, and is covered in greater detail in our Spa Start Up Business Manual, as well as our Spa Start Up, Management & Operations Distance Learning Course #1.

You will want to know what “full capacity” requirements are for each piece of equipment, so that you will be able to handle maximum usage, even though it may take you awhile to get there.

This is normally determined by calculating how much water will be used in each area, with each piece of equipment, at 100% capacity. So for example, if you have a Vichy Shower, once you know how many heads it will have, your supplier and/or spec sheets will tell you how much water each head will put out per minute. You then factor in how many minutes during each treatment the water will be running, and then the maximum number of treatments you can administer of that treatment in a day. This will give you your total water consumption for that piece of equipment, or room, at full capacity.  Do the same for your tub room, etc. Sinks, showers; pedicure basins, and the like will also have to be factored in.

If however you are a larger facility and need to know consumption totals on larger wet areas such as pools; wet tubs; grottos, etc., your hydraulic engineer should provide you with this assistance and your water heating requirements.  Leslie Lyon
