May I have a Pizzichilli please? Re-Blog

Re-blogged from Getting Great Spa April 20, 2012

Pizzichilli?? Sounds like food, but it’s not! And, if you’ve ever had this treatment, you’ve memorized the name and can’t wait to have another one!

A number of basic treatments found in many spas are taken from Pancha Karma (in Ayurveda, the holistic treatment system performed to heal the body and rid it of toxins and impurities); however, there are relatively few spas in North America that actually specialize in Ayurvedic treatments.

Most spas that do include Ayurveda are likely to offer the better-known treatments like shirodhara, abyhanga and swedana or a combination of the three, in addition to traditional western spa treatments.

You will find that, in most spas, these treatments are not specific to your dosha (see past posts), although dosha-specific oils containing specific herbs or ingredients may be used for your massage. Here’s a list of the more popular treatments:

Abhyanga (abee-yan-ga)– a friction massage that is usually performed by two therapists in tandem, forcing the massage oil to penetrate deeply and enhance circulation and the removal of toxins.

Swedana (sway-da-na) an herbal steam bath that deeply relaxes the body, reduces tension and allows toxins to be eliminated through the sweat glands.

Shirodhara (shiro-dar-a) – a profoundly relaxing treatment in which a stream of warm oil is poured over the forehead calming the central nervous system and integrating mind and body.

Gandharva (gaan-darva) utilizes the principles of sound therapy and the movement of subtle energy by using a crystal singing bowl, full body massage, marma therapy, and energy work to rebalance and rejuvenate.

Marma Therapy (mar-ma) uses pure essential oils to promote subtle energy cleansing and rebalancing by means of a light touch over the marma points which is extremely subtle, yet profoundly relaxing. Marma points are the gateways in the body where the body and mind communicate. By stimulating the marmas, blocks due to stress and improper diet can be dissolved, making the mind-body connection even more intimate.

Pizzichilli (pitzi-chilli) a continuous stream of warm herbalized oil is poured over the entire body while two therapists perform a gentle massage which is profoundly relaxing and deeply purifying.

Udvartna (ood-vart-na) a full body herbal paste massage administered by two therapists draws out excess fluids, drains the lymphatics, stimulates circulation and exfoliates the body leaving the skin polished and glowing.

I highly recommend visiting a few web sites that will give you a good feel for the way Ayurveda has been adapted to western spas and the types and intensities of treatments they have chosen for their programs: www.theraj.com and http://www.chopra.com/spa in the US and www.elementalembrace.com and www.vidawellness.com in Canada.

Please note: these are some of the primary treatments found on the more common Ayurvedic menus. They only skim the surface of Pancha Karma. There are other treatments that cleanse, purify and balance everything from the mouth, sinuses and eyes to the bowels and blood stream, making up the full Pancha Karma regimen. These are highly specialized and can be found at Ayurvedic centres and only rarely in a very few North American spas.
